Teaching a boy to fly fish

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My youngest boy Lars (13) has taken an interest in fishing. The past month and half we have been out three or four times, with varying degrees of success. Though not terribly successful yet, he seems to have picked up tying knots, casting, and anticipating where fish are likely to be pretty well. His biggest challenge is setting the hook when he feels a strike.

Last month we hiked into the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Weber River hoping to find good fishing. Unfortunately we were right at the headwaters where it was really too small and shallow to sustain fish. We also fished the upper Provo off the Mirror Lake Highway, an unnamed stream in the Uintas, as well as some local creeks. Though he has not caught that many fish yet, he is really having a good time. And I really enjoy spending time with him in the outdoors where it is quiet and peaceful. We plan to get out a few more times before it gets really cold. Below are a few photos from our various outings.
